Lakshmipur, widely known as the “kingdom of areca nut,” has recorded a bumper harvest this year, with production exceeding the target due to favorable weather conditions, timely rainfall, and the adoption of modern cultivation practices. However, farmers across the district remain frustrated as market prices have dropped significantly, overshadowing the gains from increased output. Growers have alleged that a traders’ syndicate has deliberately driven down prices, while incidents of areca nut theft have risen sharply amid the abundant harvest, creating further anxiety among farmers and traders alike.
