The nationwide dengue situation continues to worsen as infections and fatalities linked to Aedes mosquito-borne dengue fever show no sign of decline. Hospitals across the country are receiving hundreds of patients daily, and new deaths are being recorded almost every day. In the latest 24-hour reporting period, eight more people died from dengue, while 778 new patients were admitted to hospitals.
The figures were released on Sunday (23 November) through a dengue update issued by the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services.
According to the bulletin, hospital admissions in the past 24 hours included 83 patients in the Barishal division (outside city corporation areas), 134 in the Chattogram division (outside city areas), 121 in the Dhaka division (outside city corporation areas), 129 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 81 in Dhaka South City Corporation, 112 in the Khulna division (outside city areas), 44 in the Mymensingh division (outside city areas), 48 in the Rajshahi division (outside city areas), 19 in the Rangpur division (outside city areas), and seven in the Sylhet division (outside city corporation areas).
During the same 24-hour period, 1,111 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals. So far this year, a total of 87,442 patients have recovered and left medical facilities.
As of 23 November, the total number of dengue cases recorded in 2024 stands at 90,264. Among these patients, 62.3 percent were male and 37.7 percent female.
For comparison, in the previous year (1 January to 31 December 2024), Bangladesh recorded 575 dengue-related deaths and 101,214 infections. In 2023, dengue caused 1,705 deaths, and 321,179 patients required hospital admission, marking the deadliest dengue outbreak in the country’s history.
