The water level of the Teesta River has begun to recede after rising sharply overnight. Although water had surged above the danger mark at the Teesta Barrage point, it has now fallen below the critical level.
The increase in water levels began on Sunday, October 5, due to heavy rainfall and flood discharge in the upstream Indian portion of the Teesta. By midnight, the river had risen 36 centimeters above the danger mark, submerging low-lying areas along the Teesta in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, and Rangpur districts. In particular, parts of Mahishkhucha Union in Lalmonirhat were affected.
Officials from the Water Development Board confirmed that the river levels are steadily dropping. However, affected residents have urged authorities to implement the Teesta Masterplan as quickly as possible to prevent future flooding risks.
