Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has emphasized the importance of conserving the biodiversity and fisheries of Tanguar Haor, announcing that the government will take effective measures to ensure their protection. She also highlighted the need to develop Tanguar Haor as a center for responsible tourism.
She made the remarks on Saturday night while addressing a views-exchange meeting at the Sunamganj Circuit House on strategies for protecting the district’s fish resources.
The adviser noted that curbing the import, export, and use of illegal fishing nets through regular drives will significantly reduce the use of banned nets in haor and river ecosystems, ultimately enhancing fish reproduction. She added that sanctuaries are being established to protect native fish species.
According to her, fish production could be increased through measures such as removing silt from the haor, declaring fishing bans during breeding seasons, and creating sanctuaries. However, she cautioned that the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock alone cannot resolve these issues. Effective solutions, she said, will require coordination among multiple ministries, including Land, Agriculture, Water Resources, and Environment.
The meeting was attended by Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Joint Secretary Shahina Ferdousi, Sunamganj Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Elias Mia, Superintendent of Police Tofayel Ahmed, Divisional Fisheries Officer Md. Asadul Baki, District Fisheries Officer Md. Shamsul Karim, along with fisheries officials from various upazilas.
