FENI, Bangladesh – July 9, 2025 – Continuous heavy rainfall and a surge of runoff from upstream India have caused 14 breaches in flood control embankments along the Muhuri, Kahua, and Silonia rivers in Feni, inundating more than 30 villages across the Fulgazi and Parshuram sub-districts.
The district administration has mobilized a response, preparing 131 shelters to evacuate residents from high-risk areas as thousands of families are now marooned.
According to the Feni Water Development Board (WDB), water levels in the Muhuri River at Parshuram were recorded at 13.92 meters at 10 PM on Tuesday (July 8), flowing 1.37 meters above the danger level of 12.55 meters.
Officials from the Fulgazi and Parshuram administrations confirmed the embankment breaches. The Muhuri River embankment was compromised at multiple points in Jangalghona, Alka, and Shaldhar in Parshuram, and at Uttar Sripur in Fulgazi. The Silonia River embankment breached in Gadanagar and Derpara, while the Kahua River saw breaches in Satkuchia, Berabaria, and Daulatpur.
As a precautionary measure, electricity has been shut down in large parts of Feni city and the affected sub-districts. According to the Feni Power Distribution Division and the Rural Electrification Board, numerous electrical meters and several substations have been submerged. The power supply will remain suspended indefinitely until the situation improves, with officials warning that the outage area could expand if conditions worsen.
"We are constantly monitoring the situation from the ground," said Arifur Rahman, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Parshuram. "New areas are being flooded as a result of the various breaches. People have not yet started coming to the shelters in large numbers."
In contrast, Fahriya Islam, the UNO of Fulgazi, reported that evacuations have begun in her area. "We have confirmed four embankment breaches across three rivers in our sub-district. Over a hundred people have already moved to shelters, where we have arranged for dry and cooked food."
The UNO also announced that the ongoing half-yearly examinations at higher secondary educational institutions in Fulgazi have been suspended as of Wednesday.
