Chuadanga has been experiencing intensified cold conditions for the past two days, with no sign of sunlight as cloudy skies, dense fog, and cold northern winds continue to prevail. The absence of sunshine throughout the day has disrupted normal life, with the hardest hit being homeless people, day labourers, and low-income groups.
On Monday morning, Chuadanga recorded the lowest temperature in the country. At 6:00 am, the temperature stood at 12.3 degrees Celsius, which dropped further to 11.7 degrees Celsius by 9:00 am.
According to the regional meteorological office at Hatkaluganj, temperatures in the district have been declining steadily over the past two days. Persistent cloud cover has prevented sunlight, narrowing the gap between daytime and nighttime temperatures and intensifying the feeling of cold.
Abdur Rashid, a van puller from Alamdanga, said that the combination of cold northern winds and dense fog is causing severe shivering. Many people are staying indoors due to the harsh conditions, leading to a sharp decline in passenger numbers and reduced daily earnings.
Farmer Abu Jafar from Baksipur village said he has been irrigating his maize fields since early morning. Due to dense fog, visibility remains poor, and the extremely cold water is increasing concerns about crop health.
Another farmer from the same area, Abul Hossain, said that seedbeds for Boro rice have already been prepared. He warned that excessive fog could cause seedlings to rot, posing a serious risk to the crop.
Jaminur Rahman, Acting Officer-in-Charge of the Chuadanga Meteorological Office, said that cold winds and fog are contributing to lower morning and nighttime temperatures. He added that on Sunday, the district recorded a minimum temperature of 13.6 degrees Celsius, while the maximum temperature reached 18.5 degrees Celsius at 3:00 pm. On Monday morning, the temperature dropped further to the lowest level recorded in the country.
