Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has taken disciplinary action against 133 individuals, including 57 teachers, in connection with incidents linked to anti-government movements and campus violence. The decision was made during the university’s 328th Syndicate meeting.
Among those penalized are 24 officials, 21 staff members, and 31 students. The action follows allegations of their participation in a "Peace March" titled “Sheikh Hasinai Astha” on August 4, 2023, as well as involvement in violence against university students and teachers during a period of political unrest.
Sanctions against teachers include suspension of 6, dismissal of 12, demotion of 8, and formal reprimands for 31. Among the administrative staff, 8 were dismissed, 8 were removed from service, 7 received warnings, and 1 was fined BDT 500,000. Of the university’s general employees, 2 were dismissed and 19 reprimanded.
Student-related actions include lifetime expulsion of 7 and cancellation of certificates for 24.
Additionally, the university administration has disciplined 21 individuals for a separate incident on December 23, 2022, involving inhumane physical abuse of four students who were labeled as members of opposition political groups. This group includes 18 students (15 received certificate cancellation and 3 were expelled for life), 2 teachers (one demoted and another had promotion and salary increment withheld), and 1 official who was dismissed from service.
Vice-Chancellor Professor A. K. Fazlul Haque Bhuiyan stated that the disciplinary measures were based on recommendations from an investigation committee, which conducted thorough interviews and data analysis. The Syndicate approved the measures on May 18, 2025, and reaffirmed them in a subsequent meeting.
Three teachers had challenged the legitimacy of the investigation committee in the High Court, but the petitions were dismissed, and disciplinary notices are now being issued.
