Dulahazara Safari Park in Chakaria Upazila has recently welcomed several new wildlife additions, including a newborn nilgai calf. The birth occurred shortly after a pair of nilgai was brought from Gazipur Safari Park. The calf, now about two months old, is growing well under the care and attention of its parents inside the enclosure.
According to park officials, the pair included a male and a female belonging to the country’s critically endangered nilgai species. However, during transport, the female nilgai was injured after being intercepted by locals. Despite receiving treatment, the animal could not be saved. The park later acquired another female nilgai, which recently gave birth to the calf.
Ershad Ali, caretaker of the nilgai enclosure, said, “It is a matter of joy for us that the nilgai brought from Gazipur has given birth at Dulahazara Safari Park. The calf and its parents are being fed Napier grass, vegetables and fruits every day. The family is healthy.”
Naznin Akhter, a visitor from Harbang, said the safari park is a key recreational attraction not only for Chakaria residents but for the entire Chattogram region. She noted that, given the size of the park, having a larger variety of animals would make visits even more appealing.
Manzur Alam, acting officer-in-charge and ranger of the park, said several other animals have also given birth in the past one and a half to two months, including hippopotamuses, gayals, zebras and various species of deer. All the newborns are in good health and active. He added that in the bird category, more than fifty chicks have hatched from peacock and junglefowl eggs. These new arrivals are drawing increased attention from visitors.
