BARISHAL: Migratory birds have started gathering in the wetlands of Uzirpur Upazila, Barishal, even before the full onset of winter. However, the early arrival of these birds has become a cause for alarm as they are now being heavily targeted by poachers.
Local residents report that various species of guest birds have been flocking to the bils (wetlands) of Satla, Harta, Mashang, and Jalla areas of Uzirpur since the beginning of the Bengali month of Kartik (mid-October). The Satla bil has seen the largest influx, which has unfortunately led to a surge in illegal poaching activities.
Poachers are actively using traps and nets daily to capture the birds, which are then openly sold in various local markets, including Nayakandi in Satla, Harta Bazar, and Mashang Bazar. Local observers note a lack of visible action from the administration or the Forest Department to curb this illegal trade.
Despite the challenges, there is some positive news: the Forest Department recently rescued and released 21 migratory birds with the help of locals. The rescued birds included 16 Sarail ducks, 3 Dungur, one Chaga, and one Watercock.
Md. Nurul Islam Bishwas, the Forest Department’s Uzirpur Range Officer, confirmed the early arrival of the birds. He acknowledged the reports of open sales in the markets but stated, "Controlling the situation is difficult due to a shortage of manpower. Nevertheless, we are collecting information and conducting rescue operations with the cooperation of locals." He added that initiatives are underway to increase public awareness and efforts are being made to intensify patrols.
