
A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west-central Bay, with forecasts indicating possible intensification. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department said in its 120-hour outlook issued Wednesday morning that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in four divisions alongside nationwide showers and thunderstorms.
At 6 a.m. Wednesday, the system developed off the coasts of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha. The monsoon trough stretches from Rajasthan, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the foothills of West Bengal through northern Bangladesh to Assam, with an extension into the west-central and north Bay of Bengal. The monsoon is active over northern Bangladesh and moderately active elsewhere, while being moderate over the north Bay.
Over the next 24 hours, most areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and many areas of Dhaka, Khulna, and Barishal divisions, are likely to see light to moderate rain or thundershowers with temporary gusty winds. Heavy to very heavy falls may occur at isolated places in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions. Day temperatures may fall by 1–2°C and night temperatures may drop slightly.
From Thursday morning, many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and some areas of Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions, may experience similar conditions, with heavy rain possible in parts of the country. Temperatures are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
On Friday, widespread rain is likely in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, with scattered showers elsewhere. Saturday may bring widespread rain in Chattogram and Sylhet, and scattered showers in other divisions, with heavy falls likely in the two eastern divisions.
By Sunday, most areas in Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet divisions and many areas elsewhere could see light to moderate rain or thundershowers, with heavy to very heavy rain possible in the north and northeast. Temperatures are expected to remain stable.
The extended five-day outlook indicates a continuation of rainfall activity across the country.
