The government is set to introduce Starlink satellite internet connections in 100 schools across the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) within the next six months to ensure access to e-learning and modern education for students in remote hill areas.
Supradip Chakma, Advisor to the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, stated that the initiative will mark a technological revolution in education. Students in the most isolated regions will be able to attend virtual classes led by experienced teachers from urban centers, helping to reduce disparities in educational quality.
He emphasized that this access to technology will enhance digital literacy among indigenous students, equipping them with the skills necessary for higher education and future employment.
When asked about ensuring quality education for ethnic communities in the CHT region, Chakma said the primary objective is to establish competitive, high-standard educational institutions. “We cannot always rely on quotas. To compete, we need to build excellent schools and colleges,” he said.
Chakma highlighted the importance of satellite-based education and called for the construction of hostels at both district and upazila levels to support students from remote areas. He also noted government plans to establish an engineering college, a nursing college, hostels, orphanages, and dormitories in the region.
To foster self-reliance among CHT communities, the government is initiating a three-year bamboo cultivation program along with expanded livestock and fisheries projects. Chakma described bamboo as a key economic driver for the region, citing its environmental benefits and potential to establish a sustainable economic foundation for the hill districts. The government also aims to reduce water scarcity in the region through expanded bamboo use.
Additionally, the government is promoting the cultivation of cashew nuts, coffee, and maize in the hill districts to boost agricultural output and economic resilience.
Chakma stated that the government’s vision is rooted in economic self-sufficiency and ensuring the rights of all communities. “We are committed to protecting the rights of every citizen and ensuring no one in the CHT is left behind,” he said.
He reiterated the government’s pledge to advance the country while preserving communal harmony. “The government wants to protect the rights of every community and build a secular Bangladesh,” he said. “All doors to development in the hill regions are now open.”
Referring to the untapped potential of Kaptai Lake, Chakma likened it to gold, stating that harnessing its fisheries resources could contribute significantly to national economic development.
In closing, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive development under the leadership of the Prime Minister and with the support of all stakeholders. “This government is dedicated to the welfare of every citizen,” he said, adding that efforts are also underway to develop an advanced sports environment for hill students.
