Over 150,000 Lemon Saplings to Be Distributed

Over 150,000 saplings of the seedless lemon variety Binalebu-1 will be distributed free of cost to students across various regions of the country. The initiative is being implemented by the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA), which is responsible for the propagation and production of these saplings.

The saplings will be supplied nationwide through the Department of Agricultural Extension as part of a broader program tied to the observance of the July Revolution and Youth Festival. As part of this initiative, BINA’s sub-centre in Cumilla is currently producing approximately 30,000 grafted Binalebu-1 saplings.

Dr. Md. Hasanuzzaman Rony, Senior Scientific Officer and Acting Officer-in-Charge at BINA Cumilla sub-centre, confirmed the information. He highlighted the nutritional benefits of lemons, noting their high content of vitamin C, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients. These compounds help strengthen the immune system, improve digestion, and assist in weight management.

Dr. Rony also emphasized that Binalebu-1 is a seedless lemon variety developed by BINA. This cultivar is capable of bearing fruit year-round. The lemons are oval-shaped with pointed tips and are known for their pleasant aroma. While a few fruits may contain 2 to 3 seeds, most are completely seedless. Each lemon typically weighs between 90 and 150 grams. The plant begins to bear fruit within 10 to 11 months of planting.

This initiative is seen as a strategic step toward promoting nutritional awareness and sustainable agriculture among the youth population, while also encouraging interest in home gardening and local fruit production.
