Chili farmers in Durgapur, Rajshahi, are overjoyed as the price of fresh chili in the local market has surged to Tk 280–320 per kilogram after several years of low returns. Many farmers, who cultivate chili on small plots of land, are now earning lakhs of taka by selling their produce.
However, the current high prices are largely due to significant crop losses caused by extreme weather conditions. Farmers report that intense heat followed by heavy rains destroyed most of their chili plants. As a result, production has dropped considerably, creating a supply shortage and driving prices up.
This season, approximately 420 hectares in Durgapur were dedicated to chili cultivation. Despite early planting in the months of Jaistha and Ashar, heavy rainfall drowned many plants, and diseases further damaged the crops. Farmers say that nearly one-third of the chili plants in the area have perished.
In addition to local scarcity, chili from other districts—also facing similar losses—is brought to Durgapur markets, which keeps prices high across the region.
Alam, a chili farmer from Baharampur village, shared his losses: out of 16 kathas planted, nearly 10 kathas of chili plants died. Where he expected 200 kg of chili per week, he now harvests only 4–5 kg. Despite the soaring prices, he fears the high production costs may wipe out profits.
Mokbul Hossain, another farmer from Gaganbaria village, lamented the unpredictability of farming and the fluctuating prices. He urged the government to fix market prices to relieve the burden on both farmers and buyers.
Meanwhile, seller Masum from Singa market noticed a sharp drop in chili sales due to the high prices. Where he previously sold 30–35 kg daily, now he struggles to sell even 5 kg, as customers reduce their purchases drastically.
Agriculture Officer Sahana Parvin Laboni explained that waterlogging from heavy rains caused widespread crop damage, resulting in the current chili shortage and price hike. She added that the department is actively advising farmers on proper chili cultivation to help mitigate losses in future seasons.
