The Metro Rail authorities will provide an initial compensation of Tk 5 lakh to the family of the man killed after a bearing pad from the metro structure fell on him in Dhaka’s Farmgate area. The victim’s family will also be offered a job opportunity if any member is found to be capable of working, said Road and Railways Adviser Fawzul Kabir Khan.
He announced the decision on Sunday (October 26) afternoon while visiting the accident site.
“The Metro Rail will take full responsibility for the victim’s family,” said Adviser Fawzul Kabir. “Initially, they will receive Tk 5 lakh as compensation. Later, if the family has a member capable of working, they will be offered employment under the Metro Rail project. I will also visit the injured persons in the hospital soon to ensure they receive proper treatment.”
He added that a five-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the incident, headed by Bridge Division Secretary Mohammad Abdur Rauf. The committee has been asked to submit its findings within two weeks.
Earlier in the day, a man identified as Abul Kalam, a resident of Isharpati village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur district, was killed when a bearing pad from the metro rail structure came loose and fell on him near Farmgate around 12:30 p.m.
The tragic incident has raised concerns about safety measures in the ongoing metro rail operations and maintenance in the capital.
