A ceasefire is set to take effect early Saturday in the blockaded Gaza Strip, 24 hours after approval by the Israeli government, according to a report by the BBC on Friday (October 10).
The report stated that under the ceasefire terms, hostages held in Gaza are expected to be released within 72 hours of the truce taking effect. It is believed that around 20 of the captives remain alive.
In exchange, Israel will release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners from its jails.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has faced criticism for allegedly prolonging the conflict for political reasons. He thanked US President Donald Trump for his role in mediating the ceasefire agreement.
Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas’s exiled leader in Gaza, said he had received assurances from the United States and other mediators that the war is coming to an end.
