Cyclone Gabrielle formed in the central Atlantic Ocean in mid-September 2025 and rapidly intensified as it tracked across open waters. By 22 September, the system had reached Category 4 strength to the east-southeast of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of around 220 km/h, making it the second major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season.
As the storm continued moving northeastward, it weakened before reaching the Azores. On 26 September, Gabrielle struck the Portuguese archipelago as a post-tropical cyclone, bringing severe weather to the islands but with reduced intensity compared to its peak.
The Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites have provided open data to track the storm’s evolution across the Atlantic. These observations offer valuable insights into storm dynamics, atmospheric composition, and the behavior of extreme weather systems, contributing to improved monitoring and preparedness efforts.
