A giant catla fish from the Padma River in Goalanda has been sold for Tk 55,100. The 19-kilogram fish was sold on Wednesday by local fish trader Shahjahan Sheikh at the Daulatdia ferry terminal area. Earlier that morning, the fish had been caught in the Padma River near Charkarneshona village by fisherman Krishna Halder.
Krishna Halder, a resident of Nakalia village in Bera upazila of Pabna district, said he and his companions cast their nets in the river around 5 a.m. on Wednesday. Shortly after, the large catla was caught in their net. The fishermen later brought the catch to the fish market of Saku Mollah at the Daulatdia ferry terminal to sell it.
The fish weighed 19 kilograms and was auctioned off at Tk 2,800 per kilogram, fetching a total of Tk 53,200. The buyer was fish trader Shahjahan Sheikh, who later sold the catla for Tk 55,100, earning a profit of Tk 100 per kilogram.
Shahjahan Sheikh said, “I bought the fish at Tk 2,800 per kilogram and sold it at a Tk 100 margin per kg. Large catla like this are rare, and people are willing to pay a premium for them.”
