As a gesture of friendship and goodwill, Russia is sending 30,000 tons of potash fertilizer to Bangladesh free of cost. The fertilizer will be supplied by Uralkem Group, one of Russia’s leading fertilizer producers, under the framework of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
The confirmation came through a letter signed by Dmitry Konyaev, Chief Executive Officer of Uralkem Group, addressed to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Agriculture. The letter stated that Uralkem has long been committed to enhancing global food security, and that the free shipment to Bangladesh is part of the company’s sincere cooperation and support.
Ekaterina Semenova, Acting Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Dhaka, formally handed over the letter to Agricultural Adviser (Retired Lieutenant General) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Wednesday (November 11).
According to Ahmed Hasan Al Mahmud, General Manager (Procurement) of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), the process of importing the fertilizer has already begun.
Mia Sattar, Chairman of the Bangladesh-Russia Friendship Society, said, “Russia is a true and trusted friend of Bangladesh. This generous assistance will greatly benefit the country’s farmers.”
Uralkem Group has been working for years to promote global food security. One of its key subsidiaries, PJSC Uralkali, is among the world’s leading producers of potash fertilizer. Since 2013, PJSC Uralkali has supplied more than one million tons of MOP fertilizer to Bangladesh under a government-to-government arrangement through JSC Foreign Economic Cooperation.
