This year’s Aman paddy harvest has brought relief and optimism to farmers in Munshiganj, as favourable weather and expanded cultivation have led to strong yields. Harvesting has already begun across the district, with farmers reporting better outcomes than in previous years.
According to the District Agriculture Extension Office, the target for Aman cultivation in the current season was set at 3,535 hectares. However, due to government incentives and the distribution of high-yielding seed varieties, farmers ultimately cultivated 3,681 hectares, surpassing the target by 146 hectares.
Among the cultivated areas, 120 hectares were planted in Sadar upazila, 45 hectares in Tongibari, 205 hectares in Louhajang, 120 hectares in Srinagar, 3,146 hectares in Sirajdikhan and 35 hectares in Gazaria.
Swapan Dhali, a farmer from Haridia village in Louhajang, said he cultivated Aman on four acres this season. He noted that delayed water flow and favourable weather conditions contributed to a good yield. Although recent rain and strong winds caused some plants to bend, the damage was minimal and harvesting went smoothly.
Latif Sheikh, a farmer from Bonsemantho village, cultivated seven acres of high-yielding Aman. He stated that government-distributed high-yield seeds resulted in better production compared to previous years.
Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension, said the government provided high-yielding seed varieties as incentives this season, along with training on modern cultivation methods. With no major natural calamities such as storms or excessive rain, overall yield has been strong and farmers are satisfied. He added that harvesting has already been completed on 950 hectares, and the remaining work is expected to be finished within the month.
