A farmers’ rally was held in Mymensingh to promote the cultivation of three crops annually on the same land through crop rotation. The event took place on Thursday afternoon at Chakmaju village in Sutiakhali under Mymensingh Sadar upazila.
Organised by the Rice Farming Systems Division of the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), the rally encouraged farmers to cultivate mustard after harvesting transplanted Aman paddy, followed by Boro paddy.
Speaking as chief guest, Dr Rafiqul Islam, Director (Research) of BRRI, said that by adopting the Aman–mustard–Boro crop rotation system, farmers can produce three crops in a single agricultural year on the same land. He noted that this practice boosts land productivity, reduces the use of fertilisers and pesticides, and increases farmers’ profits.
He added that the crop rotation system helps address the adverse impacts of climate change and plays an effective role in ensuring food security. With proper training and increased awareness among farmers, the region could open a new horizon for sustainable agricultural development.
The event was presided over by Dr Md Ibrahim, Head of the Rice Farming Systems Division. Special guests included Md Enamul Haque, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Mymensingh, and Dr Afsana Ansari, Deputy Project Director of the LSTD project, among others.
The organising body stated that similar rallies will be arranged in the future to expand crop rotation-based farming practices among farmers.
