Farmers in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj are gearing up for the Boro paddy season as large-scale seed sowing has begun across major haors, including Shoni and Matian. Local markets in Tahirpur are witnessing a surge in activity, with farmers crowding dealers’ shops to purchase seed paddy before returning home to begin cultivation.
On Sunday afternoon, Mohsin Mia, a farmer from Bhati Tahirpur village near Shoni Haor, said farmers are now passing busy days sowing seed paddy in the haor areas. He purchased a five-kilogram packet of BADC seed paddy for Tk 630 from the Tahirpur market. In addition, he bought seeds from private companies—Shakti-2, Shakti-3, and BRAC-777—at a rate of Tk 450 per kilogram.
Nur Mia, a BADC seed dealer at Badaghat market, said that at the beginning of this Boro season, dealers in Badaghat sold around 35 tonnes of seed paddy, including both BADC and private company seeds.
Samaun Kabir, another BADC seed dealer at Tahirpur market, reported that he has sold approximately 40 tonnes of seed paddy so far this season.
Tahirpur Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Shariful Islam said the process of distributing free seed paddy among 1,100 marginal farmers across seven unions has already begun. He expressed hope that all seeds would be distributed within the next week.
