The Forest Department has rescued a rare and endangered slow loris (locally known as Lajjaboti Banor) from a residential area in Lama upazila of Bandarban.
The animal was found on Friday afternoon at a house in Merakhola Muslimpara, located in Lama Sadar Union. Officials confirmed that the slow loris is currently in their custody and in good health.
According to AKM Altaf Hossain, Forest Officer of the Lama Sadar Range, the nocturnal primate was captured by residents of Abdul Momin’s house on Thursday night. "After being informed, a team from the Forest Department promptly rescued the animal on Friday," he said.
Divisional Forest Officer Mostafizur Rahman emphasized the department’s commitment to wildlife protection: "We are dedicated to conserving wildlife and the environment. The rescued slow loris will soon be released back into nature, likely in the Matamuhuri Reserve Forest in Alikadam, once weather and environmental conditions are favorable."
The slow loris is a rare and shy species, listed as endangered due to habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade. Conservationists have praised the quick action by both local residents and forest officials, highlighting the need for increased awareness and protection of such vulnerable species.
