615 kg Illegal Hilsa Confiscated, Given to Madrasahs and Orphans

NOAKHALI – In an operation in Hatiya upazila, Noakhali, the Coast Guard seized 615 kilograms of hilsa fish, caught illegally by fishermen, worth approximately Tk 461,250. The seized fish was subsequently distributed among local madrasahs and orphanages.

Lieutenant Commander BN Harun-Or-Rashid, the media officer for the Coast Guard, provided this information on Friday afternoon.

He stated that a coordinated special operation was conducted by the Coast Guard Hatiya Station and the Fisheries Department around 3:00 AM on Thursday in the Tanki Ghat and Chairman Ghat areas. During the operation, six fishing boats (FB Amena, FB Niha, and FB Babul) were searched, leading to the seizure of approximately 615 kilograms of hilsa fish, valued at Tk 461,250, along with the three boats and the detention of 95 fishermen.

He further informed that the seized fish was later distributed to local madrasahs, orphanages, and impoverished families in the presence of Md. Foyezur Rahman, the Hatiya Upazila Fisheries Officer. The impounded boats were fined, and the 95 fishermen were released after providing a written undertaking.

It is known that the government annually imposes a 58-day ban on the catching of all types of fish in the maritime waters from April 15th to June 11th. This measure is implemented to ensure the proper breeding and production of fish, conserve marine fisheries resources, and promote sustainable fishing practices.
