Heavy Rain Pushes Teesta to Danger Level in Dalia

In Nilphamari district, the Teesta River has reached the danger level due to heavy rainfall and upstream runoff. As of 9:00 AM on Sunday, the water at the Teesta Barrage point in Dalia was flowing precisely at the danger mark of 52.15 meters.

According to the Water Development Board in Dalia, the river’s water level began rising early Sunday following intense rain and hilly inflows from upstream. At 6:00 AM, the water was recorded at two centimeters below the danger level at the Teesta Barrage point, which is part of the country’s largest irrigation project.

By 9:00 AM, the water level had increased further to touch the danger line. In contrast, just 24 hours earlier on Saturday at the same time, the river was flowing 35 centimeters below the danger level.

Local sources report that rising water has started to inundate low-lying and char (riverine) areas of Dimla upazila in Nilphamari. Residents in the affected regions are reportedly on alert.

Abdul Latif Khan, Chairman of Purbo Chatnai Union Parishad in Dimla, stated that communities along the riverbanks are maintaining vigilance as water levels continue to rise.

Despite the increase, Amitabh Chowdhury, Executive Engineer at the Dalia Water Development Board, confirmed that the overall situation remains under control. A total of 44 sluice gates at the Teesta Barrage have been opened to manage the flow.
