A postgraduate student of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) has been expelled from her residential hall for life over a social media post accused of hurting religious sentiments. The student, Dhanishree Roy, from the Faculty of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine, has also been removed from the ongoing (July–December) semester.
The decision was announced through an official order signed by Registrar Sheikh Rezaul Karim on November 4. The order stated that the university’s disciplinary board took the action based on the recommendation of an investigation committee formed to review the incident.
According to the order, Dhanishree Roy, a second-semester postgraduate student, made a Facebook comment on October 24 that was deemed religiously provocative. Following the post, a wave of backlash spread across social media, sparking outrage among students and prompting the university authorities to initiate an inquiry.
The controversy began on October 24 when Dhanishree shared a post made by an individual named Sakib Fuad and added remarks that were viewed as derogatory toward the Muslim community and madrasa students. The content quickly went viral, drawing sharp criticism from peers and other social media users.
The next day, on October 25, students organized a protest march on campus demanding strict disciplinary action against the accused student. Demonstrators chanted slogans urging the university administration to take immediate measures in response to the incident.
Following the investigation and review, the disciplinary board concluded that the student’s actions violated university regulations and warranted expulsion from the hall and the semester.
