Marginal farmers in Tanchangya Para of Chandraghona Union under Kaptai upazila have achieved success in sugarcane farming this season. Under the Sugarcrop Strengthening Project of the Chittagong Hill Tracts Development Board, farmers cultivated sugarcane during the 2024–2025 planting season on nine plots in the Resham Bagan area of Chandraghona Union’s Ward No. 2.
During a visit to the Resham Bagan fields on Tuesday morning, rows of healthy sugarcane crops were seen thriving. Farmers expressed satisfaction with the yields, noting that many had already sold their produce to traders, while others were still harvesting and selling.
Farmer Mayadevi Tanchangya told that she cultivated sugarcane on 60 decimals of land this year and achieved very good results. Wholesale buyers are purchasing each cane for Tk 22 to Tk 25, she said, adding that she had already sold part of her harvest and earned a substantial profit.
Another farmer, Iti Tanchangya, said she grew sugarcane on about one acre of land and was pleased with the overall yield and profits from sales.
Consultant of the Sugarcrop Strengthening Project, Dhaneswar Tanchangya, explained that the farmers cultivated the BCSRI Akh-42 (Rong Bilash) variety of sugarcane, which is known for its sweetness. Each of the nine plots was cultivated on one bigha of land with project support, while some farmers also expanded their cultivation independently and reported significant success.
He added that the project aims to promote sugarcane cultivation as a promising and profitable crop in the hill areas, encouraging more farmers to engage in the practice. Activities to support and expand sugarcane farming in the region will continue in the coming years.
