A severe water crisis is gripping the vast hilly region of Telmachhara in Madhabpur, Habiganj, forcing wild animals to venture close to human settlements in search of water. Wildlife, including wild boars, monkeys, barking deer, and porcupines, are increasingly appearing near the artificial water basin placed in front of the Beat Officer's office. Reports also indicate that many thirsty animals are straying into populated areas, falling prey to hunters.
On Saturday (April 26th), a group of wild boars, including piglets, were captured on camera drinking water from the artificial basin. Due to their highly aggressive nature, the footage was taken from a safe distance. The video showed the wild boars, with their young, seemingly risking their safety to quench their thirst.
According to local sources, the forests of Telmachhara Beat in Shahjahanpur Union of Madhabpur Upazila are home to a significant population of wild animals. The area's proximity to the Satchari National Park also contributes to a higher presence of wildlife. Consequently, the region faces an acute water shortage during the summer months.
Wildlife conservationists express deep concern over the situation. They emphasize the dire circumstances that compel wild animals to seek water near busy roads and artificial basins close to human habitation. This unnatural movement severely disrupts the safe passage and breeding patterns of these animals. They stress the urgent need for excavating a pond within the secluded areas of the forest.
Sadiqur Rahman, an employee of the Telmachhara Beat office, commented on the issue, stating, "Herds of wild boars, in particular, regularly come here to drink water. To address the water scarcity problem for wild animals here, our Divisional Forest Officer has initiated plans to create artificial ponds."
Dr. Jahangir Alam, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the Sylhet region, added, "Not only wild boars, but also barking deer, monkeys, porcupines, and even snakes are coming to the artificial basins we have created for drinking water. We are also taking swift action to initiate the creation of ponds in quiet locations within the forest near Satchari."
