Bangladesh has been elected as the president of the 43rd General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). According to a Facebook post by Mostafa Sarwar Faruki, the interim government’s adviser on cultural affairs, Bangladesh defeated Japan by a vote of 30-27 to secure this distinguished position.
In the initial stages of the election, South Korea and India were also in contention, but both countries withdrew their candidacies in the final round.
The 43rd session of UNESCO’s General Conference is scheduled to commence on October 30 this year at the Silk Road Conference Center in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, and is expected to conclude on November 13.
The victory is widely regarded as a major diplomatic achievement and a symbol of cultural prestige for Bangladesh. UNESCO’s General Conference serves as one of the world’s most important forums for setting global policies on education, science, and culture, making the presidency a highly respected international honor for any nation.
