A giant coral fish weighing 28 kilograms was caught in the Meghna River near Nijhum Dwip in Hatiya upazila of Noakhali. The fish was sold for Tk 42,000 at an auction in Namar Bazar on Saturday morning.
Fisherman Md. Rashed Majhi of Ward 2 in Nijhum Dwip Union netted the fish late Friday night. He brought it to Ibrahim Fish Market on Saturday morning, where it was auctioned for Tk 1,500 per kilogram. The buyer was local BNP leader Md. Ibrahim, owner of the market.
Sohel, manager of Ibrahim Fish Market, said this was the first time Rashed had ever caught such a large coral fish. “The fish weighed 27.7 kilograms. We often see coral fish weighing between 17 and 20 kilograms here, but this is the largest caught so far this year,” he said.
Buyer Ibrahim noted the rarity of the catch. “Such large coral fish are not common. People prefer buying bigger ones, so I hope to resell it at a good price,” he said.
Upazila Fisheries Officer Md. Fahad Hasan explained that Hatiya and Nijhum Dwip, surrounded by the Meghna River, provide rich fishing grounds. “Large fish are caught frequently, and fishermen earn good prices. Government restrictions on fishing during conservation periods have helped increase the number of big fish. We expect even larger catches in the coming days,” he said.
