
The government of Bangladesh is set to import an additional 50,000 metric tons of rice from India at a total cost of Tk 219.09 crore. The proposal was approved on Tuesday during a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase held at the Secretariat, chaired by Economic Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.
According to meeting sources, the Food Ministry’s proposal to import the rice through an international open tender received approval. The consignment will consist of 50,000 tons of non-basmati parboiled rice, to be procured from India’s M/s Bagadia Brothers Pvt Ltd at a price of USD 359.77 per ton, amounting to Tk 219.09 crore in total.
Earlier, for the fiscal year 2025–26, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the import of 400,000 tons of rice from international sources to meet the state’s emergency food needs. Under this decision, import proposals from India, Pakistan, and Vietnam have already received approval.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, in addition to government efforts, private sector imports are also being encouraged to help stabilize domestic rice prices and ensure sufficient supply in the market.
