Chapainawabganj: Bangladesh is set to commence mango exports to China for the first time on May 28. China has expressed interest in purchasing 1.2 lakh metric tons of mangoes from Bangladesh this current season. This information was revealed today, Tuesday (May 20), by Anwar Hossain, Vice Chairman and Additional Secretary of the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), during an exchange meeting with mango exporters and traders organized by the Chapainawabganj Chamber of Commerce.
He also announced that in June, an exhibition of various mango varieties will be organized in Dhaka, bringing together diplomats and businesspeople, to generate interest in exporting mangoes abroad.
The EPB Vice Chairman urged entrepreneurs to leverage the immense potential of processed mango products alongside fresh mangoes. He stated that the Export Promotion Bureau would implement all necessary measures to address challenges in mango export, including transportation, cargo facilities, hot water treatment plants, and quarantine issues.
He appealed to stakeholders in the mango sector to set a future target of exporting 3 to 5 lakh metric tons of mangoes to China and other countries within the next three years. He also encouraged them to adopt advanced technology, pursue global certification, and strive for world-class mango production.
Chinese representatives, buyers, and the Chinese Ambassador have already visited various mango orchards in Chapainawabganj and expressed their interest in purchasing mangoes. Following these visits, a list of export-quality mango producers and exporters has been sent to the Chinese Embassy. China will progressively acquire these mangoes from the growers after ensuring compliance with sanitary and phyto-sanitary requirements.
The meeting, presided over by Abdul Wahed, President of the Chapainawabganj Chamber, also saw speeches from Md. Shahjalal, Director of the Export Promotion Bureau; Iktekhaiul Islam, Additional Deputy Commissioner; Munjer Alam Manik, General Secretary of the Chapainawabganj Agriculture Association; and exporters Ismail Khan Shamim and Ahsan Habib, among others.
Earlier, Anwar Hossain inspected various mango orchards cultivated under the export-oriented mango production project in Shibganj.
